Pillow block bearings

Pillow block bearings provide excellent support for rotating shafts. Sometimes called plummer blocks, the pillow block consist of a bearing insert with a pedestal style housing usually with two bolt holes in it's base. In most instances, pillow block housings are made from cast iron, however other housing materials are available. Stainless steel, Nickel or polyamide housings provide specific solutions for industries such as food & beverage where washdonws are frequent.

What are pillow block bearing units and where are they used?

A pillow block ball bearing unit comprises of a robust mounting bracket which houses a radial ball bearing.

The exterior housing is generally made from cast iron as standard, but other material options such as pressed steel or thermoplastic are available to suit environmental conditions and industry requirements.

Pillow blocks can be found in almost every industry, with pillow block ball bearing units particularly suited to applications with a high speed and a low to moderate load.

These units have a variety of sealing options and end covers to suit even the most contaminated of environments.

Pillow Block Bearings FAQs

What is a Pillow Block Bearing?

A pillow block bearing is a housing that contains a bearing designed to support a rotating shaft. The housing sits on a surface (often a base or mounting block), providing stable support and alignment while the bearing allows for smooth rotational motion of the shaft.

Can Pillow Block Bearings handle misalignment?

Yes, most pillow block bearings are designed to handle slight misalignment. This flexibility is especially useful in applications where perfect alignment is difficult to achieve or where there may be slight movement or vibrations.

Are Pillow Block Bearings available in the UK?

Yes, pillow block bearings from Acorn Industrial Services are widely available in the UK. We offer a wide range of sizes, materials, and types to suit different industrial needs. Popular suppliers in the UK include SKF, NSK, and Timken.

What is the difference between a Pillow Block Bearing and a Plummer Block?

Both pillow blocks and plummer blocks support rotating shafts, but pillow block bearings are typically used for lighter loads, while plummer blocks are more robust and designed for heavier industrial applications. Plummer blocks also often have additional sealing and lubrication options for harsher environments.
