SKF INSOCOAT Bearings For Rewinders

When an electric motor fails, there are two options. Either you replace the entire drive, or you rewind the existing motor by replacing its brushes and windings.

The option that you choose will depend largely on how cost-effective it is. For a standard size, commonly available electric motor, it is probably more cost-effective to replace the motor. However, for large, bespoke drives or smaller precision motors, it is worth considering rewinding the existing motor.

Around half of all electric motor failures are caused by bearing failures. However, there is usually a deeper root cause to the failure, such as poor maintenance, improper installation or stray electric currents.

If a standard bearing is hit by an electric current, this can cause arcing. Arcing occurs where there is a difference in potential between the bearing and the shaft, and can cause excess vibration, heat and noise. This will shorten the lifespan of the bearing, causing premature failure.

One way to avoid this problem is to install SKF INSOCOAT® bearings. INSOCOAT® bearings provide two functions in one solution, acting as a bearing whilst providing electrical insulation. They are able to virtually eliminate electrical erosion, increasing uptime and reducing maintenance costs.

INSOCOAT® bearings have a minimum electrical resistance of 200 MΩ and are able to withstand voltages of up to 3,000 V DC. The aluminium oxide coating is insensitive to heat and chemicals, making it ideal for use in humid environments.

Almost every SKF bearing type is available as INSOCOAT®, with the most popular ranges including deep groove ball bearings and cylindrical roller bearings. Special bearings such as tapered roller bearing units and four-point contact ball bearings can also be supplied as INSOCOAT® bearings.
